Let Platoro Backpacking Adventures guide you through areas of the South San Juan Wilderness, home to some of the most remote scenic mountain ranges, valleys, rivers, and glacier-carved lakes. Wildlife is abundant along with inspiring views. Make this a trip to remember!

Platoro Backpacking Adventures offers eight guided hikes for you to choose from. They vary in difficulty, distance, and time. But no matter which hike you choose, you are guaranteed breathtaking views as you are guided through this wild and rugged country.

Dates: July 1-31
Prices: $75 per person, $200 minimum

All minors MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

As part of our service, you will be provided a knowledgeable, medically trained guide, a group medical kit, and trekking poles. Backpacks are available for an additional $5 per pack.

You will be responsible for carrying your own water, snacks, lunch, rain gear, bug spray, and any personal medical supplies.

Rain and cold temperatures are common, so be prepared. Should dangerous weather arise, the guide has the right to cancel or postpone a hike. No alcoholic beverages are allowed on the hike.

Whatever you pack in, you pack out.

Big Lake: 5-6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Time: 4-6 hours

Just a short ascent from Sky Line Lodge, you will find yourself high above the town of Platoro, leaving civilization behind. The trail takes you through a dense forest. If you watch carefully, you will see the fauna change along with the altitude. Big Lake is known for its clean waters and abundant fish.

Cornwall Mountain: 8-10 miles
Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous
Time: 4-6 hours

This hike leads straight UP from Sky Line Lodge, where you will be hiking the historic Sawmill Gulch Trail. After a strenuous two mile climb, you will have an incredible view of the valley and reservoir as a reward. From there, you will breathe easier as you have an easy hike to the summit of Cornwall.

Ruybalid Lake: 9-10 miles
Difficulty: Strenuous Due to Elevation Gain
Time: 6-8 hours

This spectacular trail will challenge your fitness level as you climb about 30 switchbacks on your way to the top. You will find yourself towering above the Conejos River, with views of the San Luis Valley and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Bear Lake: 6-7 miles
Difficulty: Strenuous Due to Elevation Gains
Time: 6-8 hours

This trail provides some amazing views and a high alpine lake. It is not uncommon to see eagles soaring high above the 1,000 foot cliffs that border areas around the lake.

Adam’s Fork: 8-10 miles
Difficulty: Moderate Due to Length
Time: 5-7 hours

This trail quickly crosses a bubbling stream on the way towards the Continental Divide. It offers a sense of solitude and views of sawtooth mountain tops.

Blue Lake: 12 miles
Difficulty: Strenuous Due to Elevation Gain + Creek Crossings
Time: 8-10 hours

Blue Lake is a long time favorite for many folks. It sits along the Continental Divide Trail where moose, mountain lion, and other wildlife have been spotted at this high altitude lake. In order to complete this hike in one day, a high level of fitness is required.

Conejos Falls: 9-10 miles
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Time: 5-7 hours

This hike is one of our favorites. You will be surrounded by beautiful mountains with the Conejos River always at your side. There is nothing like an 80 foot waterfall to calm the soul!

Tobacco Lake + Conejos Peak: 4-6 miles
(4-wheel drive required to reach the trail head)
Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous
Time: 4-6 hours

This trail begins high and stays high. After a couple of miles on the trail, you will find the basin which is home to Tobacco Lake. If you choose to continue and climb Conejos Peak, you will find the view worth the hard work and time!
